Arginine alpha-ketoglutarate (AAKG) is a salt formed by combining two molecules of the amino acid L-Arginine and one molecule of alpha-ketoglutarate. L- Arginine is a nonessential amino acid that influences several metabolic factors that are important to athletes. AKG (alpha-ketoglutarate) is the nitrogen-free portion of the amino acid and it is formed in the Krebs cycle; the energy-producing process that occurs in most body cells.
The alpha-ketoglutarate version of arginine is more efficient. When you combine these two things it’s more easily absorbed, plus you get the benefits of both compounds.
AAKG can boost short term nitric oxide (NO) levels which creates a muscle growth environment in your body by increasing the volume of blood flowing through muscle tissue. This leads to increased oxygen and nutrient delivery, glucose uptake, muscle velocity and power output. AAKG also helps amplify muscle-growth signals giving faster gains in lean mass and accelerates both fast and slow twitch muscle fiber for greater strength, improved muscle recovery, and increased endurance.
There is no standard dose of L-Arginine AKG. Studies have used different amounts for different conditions. One common dosage is 4 to 6 grams three times a day.
Most people taking L-Arginine AKG have few side effects. It can cause nausea, cramps, diarrhea, allergic reactions, and asthma symptoms. It could also cause low blood pressure and changes to glucose and blood chemical levels. The safety of long-term L-Arginine AKG supplement use is not clear. Ask your doctor for advice.
