Advertisements for energy drinks are plastered on the walls at sporting events and on the jerseys of leading athletes. The beverage makers sponsor models, music events and videos games. Makers of such drinks claim their elixirs will boost your immune system, enhance your performance, and help you feel energized.

No wonder 30 to 50 percent of adolescents and young adults say they buy energy drinks. According to a study from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 8 percent of young people drink energy drinks weekly, 20 percent think that energy drinks are safe drinks for teenagers and 13 percent think that energy drinks are a type of sports drink.

But are they safe to drink — especially for teenagers and young adults?

Stephanie Nguyen Lai, M.D., a pediatrician with the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, says the simple answer is “no.” She says that energy drinks are full of sugar, sodium and loaded with caffeine – often twice as much as coffee and eight times as much as a soda. They’re an unhealthy beverage for anyone, especially a growing youth’s body.

Most of the health concerns involving energy drinks center on their caffeine content. Importantly, it is generally recommended that adults consume no more than 400 mg of caffeine per day.

Energy drinks typically only contain around 80 mg of caffeine per 8 ounces (237 ml), which is pretty close to an average cup of coffee; but the problem is that many energy drinks are sold in containers larger than 8 ounces (237 ml). Additionally, some contain more caffeine, especially “energy shots,” which has 200 mg of caffeine in only 1.93 ounces (57 ml).

On top of that, several energy drinks also contain herbal extracts like guarana, a natural source of caffeine that contains around 40 mg of caffeine per gram; and energy drink manufacturers are not required to include this in the caffeine content listed on the product label, which means the total caffeine content of many beverages can be drastically underestimated.

Depending on the type and size of the energy drink you consume, it is not hard to exceed the recommended amount of caffeine, especially if you consume multiple energy drinks in one day. Although occasionally drinking one energy drink is unlikely to cause any harm, it is probably wise to avoid consuming energy drinks as a part of your daily routine.

hidden gem. this is the best thing i have ever found. i use to drink a lot of energy drinks through out the day, not any more. i use this as a pre workout in the morning and i feel great all day. if im going to do an extra workout in the afternoon i will tank another 1/2 at lunch and I can push much better in my evening workout. i do not sleep well and the only time this effects me is when i take it later in the day and i do not workout. even then i can still fall asleep fairly easy. best thing ever.

Definitely a fan! As someone who usually isn't affected by caffeine, I often struggle with feeling fully awake and alert during the day. HOWEVER, this stuff works! I have tried so many things in the past, coffee, energy drinks, and nothing seemed to leave me feeling more energetic; until I found this! I can actually feel it working throughout my body, even in the weight of my eyelids. It's incredible the difference it makes in my day! I have struggled with this FOR YEARS and I am so happy that I finally found something that actually works for me. PLUS, there's no "crash" that comes on later! I don't even notice it wearing off.

razor blade focus. I thought this product may induce a power thirst kind of reaction. Nothing could be further from the truth. The effects of this product sneak up on you. Two hours after taking it you'll suddenly realize you've been banging away at the keys of your computer and shredding through multiple documents and it hits you. You've been so focused on your work that didn't realize the effects had kicked in. By the end of a 9 hour day, I am still going with out hitting a brick wall. I highly recommend this if you don't want to have tingle face and still interact with people.
